I would sincerely appreciate your prayer support for my little family. Yesterday we discovered that Kaelyn has cancer - retinal blastoma - a tumor in her right eye. It does not appear to have metastasized to her left eye, however, we do not know if it has gone into her brain. Her right eye will have to be removed, along with much of the nerves, etc., behind the eye that go to the brain. If the other eye is affected, she will need to undergo chemo, etc. If it is in fact in the brain, it will run its course. Today we see a pediatric ophthalmologist; tomorrow Kaelyn will go to the surgery center in the early a.m. for more testing while under anesthesia. I do not know yet when surgery will be performed. This is difficult for any mother/grandmother to hear and to deal with . However, because of Mandy's mental illness, she not able to process stress in a positive manner. This will not be an easy journey for either of us - or for Kaelyn. My devotional this a.m. read that courage is "a firmness in spirit to face a crisis and not retreat." God is faithful. Please pray as the Lord leads. Patty B.

Kaelyn's surgery went as well as expected. She's in a lot of pain. They took out the tumor and sent it to pathology. Will not know results for about a week. They took out her eye, nerves and the mass and put in the prothesis. She is resting as comfortably as possible but is asking for her grandma. Will keep you posted.
ReplyDeleteKaelyn had surgery on Friday. The surgury was more extensive than planned because the tumor was larger than expected. Kaelyn has a prothesis eye, which is covered with a patch. She was released from the hospital on Saturday and has been doing well. There are times when she is in pain, including while she is sleeping. This is getting better. Kaelyn is a real "trooper" and is adapting to having a patch on her eye. Patty and her daughter Mandy will be taking Kaelyn to the oncologist and her surgeon tomorrow to see how things are going. The results from pathology may not be available for a week. They don't know yet if the cancer has spread past the right eye area, but are hoping and praying that it did not. Patty wishes to thank everyone for their prayers, thoughts and concern. Also, Patty asked for additional prayer for her daughter (Kaelyn's mother), Mandy, who had been suffering with bi-polar disorder. Mandy has hit a major state of depression and is seeing her doctor today. Please pray that she will be healed from this disorder and that she will start bonding more with her daughter (Kaelyn). Thanks, Ruby
ReplyDeletePatty asked me to give an update on Kaelyn. Kaelyn went to the oncologist and her pediatrian yesterday. According to Patty the oncologist team is wonderful and being agressive. They are scheduling an MRI as soon as possible for Kaelyn. At the pediatrian's office, Mandy (Kaelyn's mom) removed the patch from her eye. The area is healing nicely and has very little swelling and some bruising. Kaelyn's prosthesis has a milky colored plastic protective coating for now. This was difficult for Mandy and Patty to handle. Kaelyn is talking about her eye and asking questions. She is doing remarkably well considering all that she has gone through this week. Late last night their pediatrian called with the pathology report. The tumor was definitely cancer and it was good that they removed it as quickly as they did. Also, the nerve that leads to the brain had no cancerous cells, which is GREAT news because that probably means that the cancer has not spread to the brain!! I have been delivering food, toys/activities and other stuff this week and will continue until they are back on a somewhat normal schedule. Meals have been provided until Friday. If anyone wishes to donate food or even money to order food for them during this time, that would be great. She could also use other things, so if you are not able to provide meals, please check with me for other ideas. Patty is very tired with all that is going on. She appreciates all of the support that she has already received so very much! She apologises for not being able to call everyone who has contacted her, but her main focus is on her granddaughter and daughter right now. She promises to contact people as soon as she is able to. Ruby
ReplyDeleteKaelyn was doing much better. My kids and I visited on Tuesday night after work. Kaelyn was in a very good mood and played "shopping" with my son. Kaelyn was very happy and enjoyed giving hugs and visiting. She was eating better and overall doing much better. She is still having headaches and is still healing. Patty and Mandy thank you for your support and concern. They are still waiting for an MRI to be scheduled. I will be seeing them sometime this weekend if anyone has anything to deliver, I would be happy to do so. Ruby
ReplyDeleteI talked to Mandy (Kaelyn's mom) this morning. Kaelyn had an MRI on Wednesday. They are awaiting a report. Patty will be calling this afternoon if she hasn't heard anything. They may not get results until early next week. Also, Kaelyn is still having headaches, but they seem to be less frequent. Mandy is also in need of prayer for healing from bi-polar. I know God can do it, we just need to ask!!! Also, Patty is in need of continuous sleep. Thanks, Ruby
